February 5th marks the start of the Chinese New Year and communities around the world will be celebrating the Year of the Pig with street parades, festivals and parties. Based on the lunar and solar calendars, the actual date of Chinese New Year varies, but always falls between late January and mid-February.
Large crowds of people are expected to descend on the West End to mark Chinese New Year 2019, and there’ll be celebratory activities throughout the day for you to enjoy. Trafalgar Square is home to the main stage, where you can see dragon and lion dances, acrobatics, music and dance performances, surrounded by tempting Chinese food stalls
Shaftesbury Avenue will be hosting thrilling martial art performances, classical music, and DJs in their cultural zone, Leicester Square will be full of interactive family-friendly activities and children’s performances, and lion dances will swing their way through Chinatown, where craft stalls and zodiac animals will join the fun.
In China this means a whole week’s holiday but for us there are events all around the UK in all the major cities.
London hosts the biggest parade in the world outside China on Sunday February 10th, beginning at 10.00 am on Charing Cross Road with Dragon and Lion Dances.
If you are hosting a Chinese New Year Party, our vibrant paper lanterns are the perfect decoration for your venue. Choose red – the lucky colour - sizzling orange and hot pink.
They come in various sizes from 8” in diameter. If you are crafty some Chinese characters can be added or a few hanging tassels – whatever takes your fancy.
