Celebrating the Year of the Monkey

February 8th marks the start of the Chinese New Year and communities around the world will be celebrating the Year of the Monkey with street parades, festivals and parties. Based on the lunar and solar calendars, the actual date of Chinese New Year varies, but always falls between late January and mid-February.

In China this means a whole week’s holiday but for us there are events all around the UK in all the major cities.

London hosts the biggest parade in the world outside China on Sunday February 14th, beginning at 10.00 am on Charing Cross Road with Dragon and Lion Dances. There are events at the Museum of Childhood and the National Gallery where all the family can get involved, and at Chiswick House there is a Chinese Lantern Festival with a 5-week programme of performances and an exhibition of 50 giant hand-crafted lanterns and a 60m long dragon stretched out across a lake!
