Diwali is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated every year in October or November, depending on the cycle of the moon. This year Diwali will be celebrated on 23rd October. The Festival of Light celebrates the idea that light conquers darkness; that good defeats evil, knowledge surmounts ignorance, and hope overcomes despair.
The word Diwali means 'rows of lighted lamps'. Traditionally, Hindus gather with friends and family for prayers followed by a spectacular fireworks display, a feast and the giving of presents.
Before Diwali everyone cleans and decorates their home, dresses in their finest outfits and illuminate their homes with Diyas, oil burning lamps and lanterns along with candles; this is to help the goddess of Wealth, Lakshmi, find her way into the home.
As a safe, child-friendly alternative to oil lamps and candles, decorate your home with some of our jewel coloured paper lanterns in the tones associated with Indian silks and saris. Our deep fuchsia pink, rich purple, gold, turquoise and orange.
